You never know what to expect for Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power. As a performer, she has traversed a variety of genres and singing styles throughout her career. It wouldn’t have surprised anyone if her latest release came out as a dubstep/soul mashup. Thankfully, Marshall surprised us by being on top of her game: on Sun (her first album of new material since 2006), the Atlanta native sounds better than ever before.
She recorded most of the instrumentation herself, and the album is a mix of punk, blues, electronic music, and worldly affectations (see: “Ruin”). The climax comes in an advice letter of sorts to ex-boyfriend Giovanni Ribisi’s daughter: “Nothin’ But Time” is an 11 minute hug with an Iggy Pop cameo. There, Marshall sings “It’s up to you to be a superhero,” and it’s not a stretch that she’s also speaking to herself. Sun is proof that she might just have some powers that we don’t know about yet.
