There was no album that I played more this year than Sharon Van Etten‘s third LP Tramp. Through her three albums there’s a running theme of love, heartbreak, loss, and vulnerability, but with each new release she grows more and more. On Tramp she’s taken the heartbreak and blanketed it with a tinge hope. When she admits that we all make mistakes on “All I Can”, it’s an affirmation that there’s nothing wrong with being fallible, that everyone hurts, loses, loves, cries, fears, and feels, we just have to cope with them all as best as we can. In her three album discography she seems to got through more toil and strife than most of us do in a lifetime, but she’s evolving into a more complex songwriter and more talented musician because of it, exemplified in the variety of emotions expressed in the album’s 12 tracks. You don’t need to be going through a breakup or even be in love to be able to relate to Tramp, you just have to be human.
