Fiona Apple, not to be outdone by her own self, has released another record to wear out with repeat listens; to memorize the transitional ins and outs and in-betweens of; her fourth studio album: The Idler Wheel…
Apple is an artist you grow with, and The Idler Wheel… is a gift whose songs you adopt like your own. It’s is as succinct as it is a run-on, showcasing Apple’s strongest suits: her voice, her words, her piano. Playful without being directionless, incorporating unconventional instrumentation and found sounds. Never too much or too little, always just right because it’s unabashedly Fiona. From the equally vulnerable and defiant “Every Single Night“ to the playful, jubilant closer “Hot Knife“, her rawness and nerve are at the surface.
Despite a sparse discography relative to an almost-20 year career–It’s a reminder that truly The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. The wait always worth it.
