Has anyone realized how the indie world has been seeing a new emergence of female popstars? This past year we’ve been digging MS MR‘s Lizzy Plapinger, AlunaGeorge‘s Aluna Francis, Solange, and Sky Ferreira. And now there’s UK seventeen year-old Chlöe Howl whose debut single “No Strings” has been circulating around the blogosphere like a storm.
With an aesthetic somewhere between that of Lily Allen, and Passion Pit , Columbia Records‘ new youngster puts forth a sound that is both sassy and pop-centered, kicking off with a “Pumped Up Kicks” reminiscent bassline, before jumping into a sugary synth-filled chorus. Lyrics like “Don’t even know if I’m the right sex / you don’t even know if I’m the right sex” and a chorus that begins with “Fuck your no strings” introduce us to this cheeky teenager who knows what happens when you have a bit too much cheap liquor to drink.
It looks as though I’ve finally found someone to fill the two-year void left by Robyn after Body Talk became my girl power dancing-on-my-own and singing-in-the-shower album of choice. If the Swedish popstar decides to take another year off, but in return we get a full-length by Miss Chlöe Howl, I think I’ll be all right.
