Listen to the new song from Hip Hatchet, “Sing Me A Reprise”, taken from his forthcoming album “Joy And Better Days”.
It’s been great over the past few months to watch Philippe Bronchtein, a.k.a. Hip Hatchet, grow – and I don’t just mean his beard. When we first featured him back in August last year, he had one full-length out, “Men Who Share My Name”, which had been kicking about for over a year. It might have been his first effort as a folk artist, but already it displayed the warmth and maturity of someone much more established.
When his “Coward’s Luck” EP dropped at the end of last year, I was delighted and impressed to see that he’d built on that start and gone from strength to strength, and “Sing Me A Reprise” – our first taster of his new LP, “Joy And Better Days” - continues on exactly the same trajectory. At some point he’ll presumably have to stop improving, but not yet.
The production is really lovely; warm, intimate, and the perfect complement to Philippe’s finger-picking. His voice is as husky, and the lyrics as personal, as ever. “Joy And Better Days” is released on the 10th of April – the full track-listing is up on Bandcamp, although only “Sing Me A Reprise” is streaming for the moment. All indications are that when it drops it’ll be fantastic.
