Listen: Karen O – The Moon Song

Her Spike Jonze Karen O

The world can never get enough Spike Jonze movies that challenge both reality and everything we’ve ever believed to be true and socially acceptable. His new film Her is no exception. Akin to Jonze‘s Where the Wild Things Are for which Karen O was nominated for a Grammy and Golden Globe, Her features Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman herself on the track, “The Moon Song”.

The trailer features a portion of the track, and the full version will be available for free download via Soundcloud for the first 10,000 listeners. In the film “The Moon Song” is sung by Joaquin Phoenix as a vulnerable writer and Scarlett Johansson, the operating system with which Phoenix falls in love. Karen O recorded the track in her own home, and she croons like the illegitimate love child of Kimya Dawson circa Juno soundtrack and Aska Matsumiya from Jonze’s short film soundtrack I’m Here.

Just as I’m Here features two lovestruck robots in Los Angeles while mirroring the plot line of Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, Her pinpoints the challenges of love in the digital age.

In addition, Arcade Fire composed the music for Her after their song “Wake Up” off Funeral was featured in the trailer for Where the Wild Things Are. Jonze has perfected the art of pulling at his audience’s heartstrings via Karen O‘s poignant acoustics and Arcade Fire‘s stirring baroque, post-punk armory of instrumentation.

Her will premiere for a limited time December 18 in New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto, and will debut elsewhere January 10. Watch the trailer and listen to “The Moon Song” below.
