Ahh yes, the good ol’ tactic of sampling a popular and catchy indie track and coupling it with some hip hop; I call this wonderful phenomena “white frat boy rap”. All joking aside, there’s something to it; though there’s a fine line, but Chiddy Bang struts that shit. Chiddy Bang consists of Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege and Noah “Xaphoon Jones” Beresin, of Philadelphia. This is the music you put on a parties and everyone agrees that it rules, this alone speaks volumes to their appeal. The rapping is solid and the tracks are fan favorites, the lyrics are playful and you can tell they’re having a blast making music.
I first heard of Chiddy Bang, ironically, when my friend put it on whilst we were playing beer pong on a pool table at a party (lolololol YES). Though I had never heard of them at this point, I found myself wanting to sing along with it… sampling MGMT in their track “The Opposite of Adults” (get it?), you couldn’t help but smirk a bit. This was a track previously included on a “Music Monday” playlist here. Hungering for a bit more I stumbled up on their track “Truth”, sampling Passion Pit… another good one. This MC/producer duo is hip as fuck, there’s no getting around it, gaining traction with a crowd.. drawing them in with familiar hooks and truly representing Philly’s style of hip hop. Fuck it, I try to front like I’m a true hip hop head but… I fucking love that they sample these artists.
They bring to us “Rebel”, a newly released track that is just showcasing their true style. No name dropping samples, just their talent and style shining through. It’s a great track, again, it’s just another great one to set up on a playlist and let it shine at a party. I dig their style, they’re releasing a full length called “The Swelly Life” and I’m going to be sure to pick it up and play it out. Check it out, kiddies, we got some rising stars on the loose!
