We introduced you to Melbourne’s Hayden Calnin about a month ago, and on September 19th I got to attend his intimate EP release show at FBi Social at the Kings Cross Hotel, which also marked his first headlining show in Sydney.
After an adorable proposal onstage, Hayden Calnin took the stage and took the audience on a journey of gorgeous, mesmerizing music. The Melbourne native explained that while he usually has a small backing band, their car broke down en route to Sydney, leaving him alone onstage with a guitar, a synthesizer, and his various drum loop mechanisms.
The singer/songwriter wowed the crowd with his varied, more minimal renditions of each song on his debut EP, Cities: EP highlight “For My Help”, a track where Hayden‘s falsetto almost trumps that of Justin Vernon, implemented some incredible vocal looping, and as a result, some of the most gorgeous harmonies. “Winter I” and “Winter II” showcased some WU LYF and Youth Lagoon-inspired ethereal production, as “Shutters” and “Summer” further showcased Hayden‘s beautiful vocals. He also played some fabulous unreleased tracks with the same atmospheric production, dramatic buildups, vocal contrasts, and gorgeous harmonies that we love in his previous works. This guy is most definitely going places.
