It could be that everything’s running right on schedule, and it could be that we’re hearing of this release date because of M.I.A. tweeting that she’d leak her upcoming album herself if her label didn’t hurry up. Regardless, we’re happy to hear that the long-awaited Matangi, yet another album monikered after M.I.A. herself, will be released November 5th.
As evidenced by M.I.A.‘s blatant frustration, the album production hasn’t been easy in the least. In an interview with The Gold Coast Bulletin, she spoke of label executives rejecting her initial recordings of Matangi and asking her to “darken it up”. Frustrated by the demands and delays of labels, the alt-hip hop star also told BBC Radio 1′s Zane Lowe that this upcoming full-length will likely be her last. “It’s just one of those things where I’ve given up at this point,” she said. “I was literally going to start putting out records from my bedroom.”
I, for one, hope M.I.A. takes a stab at that homemade production idea after Matangi is all said and done. There’s no one in the business quite like her.
