So this video isn’t super new – but it’s the lead single of their just-released sophomore album whose brilliance I only just came across. And I believed it deserved to somehow get on LB4YB – pronto!
Certain bands’ music sounds like their namesake (How To Dress Well, for instance, makes fresh, polished, put-together synth pop), but with a name like Ball Park Music, there’s no telling what to expect, which is why their “genre” is perfectly summed up on their Facebook page as “Pop/Crackle/Snap”, which is basically what you get if you cross Belle & Sebastian with fun. and send them to Australia: Australia’s youth making polished pop with some lovely harmonies.
The Brisbane five-piece has had a crazy past couple of years: between their debut full-length Happiness And Surrounding Suburbs reaching critical acclaim throughout Australia and the just-released Museums already reaching #2 on Australia’s alternative iTunes charts, they’ve managed to keep themselves very busy. And they were named TripleJ Unearthed’s #1 act of 2011. These guys have really been knocking it out of the park (ha)!
Anyways, “Surrender” is a grand slam of a hit, as it proves that these guys are one of the past year’s greatest indie pop acts as frontman Sam Cromack’s signature croon sounds nonchalant as ever, while maintaining an endearing quality. It’s also got a slightly acoustic feel, while maintaining their we’re-so-uncool-that-we’re-cool swag that has won over many adoring fans.
With a hefty Australian fan base (21,000+ Facebook fans) and some pretty baller (that’s the last one, I swear) music, it’s a wonder that they have yet to break out in the States. But no worries, that’s where LB4YB can help, right?
