Live + Photos: Deer Tick @ Newport Folk Festival (7/28/12)

Deer Tick put on a sweet performance yesterday here at Newport Folk Festival. Although it was short, it was indeed sweet. McCauley wasn’t as goofy and talkative as he often seems in live shows, but it didn’t matter. The band sounded great together. They did a mix of songs from Divine Providence and War Elephant.

Perhaps their set seemed far too short because I could listen to Deer Tick for hours. It was fantastic to see the Ticks roll up behind the Quad stage where they tumbled out of a red van to catch their buddy Jonny Corndawg‘s set, before theirs. There were also a few ticks on the sidelines of Guthrie Family Reunion later that day. McCauley (and Taylor of Dawes) joined Jonny Corndawg for a song or two prior to the Tick’s set. McCauley jammed out with Corndawg on a tambourine and Taylor proved what a brilliant guitarist he is (then and every other time he popped up throughout the festival, which felt like close to 50; each time was amazing- Dawes represent).

Overall it was just great to be around Deer Tick and to see Ian, John and the whole crew rocking out like they do best in an environment that they are so comfortable in.
